Gombe State Government has taken a major step towards addressing Nigeria’s learning crisis with the introduction of technology-driven learning tools in public schools across the state.
The state Commissioner for Education Professor Aishatu Maigari, who disclosed this in an interview , said this is part of a broader education reform programme aimed at improving learning outcomes and reducing the number of out-of-school children.
According to the Commissioner, the reform is part of the education transformation agenda of Governor Muhammadu Yahaya, who declared a state of emergency in the education sector shortly after assuming office in 2019.
Professor Maigari explained that the state government has partnered with EIDU, an international education technology organisation, to strengthen foundational literacy and numeracy among pupils through technology-driven instruction.
She noted that the EIDU programme is already being implemented in selected schools across the state, reaching more than 11,000 pupils in 16 schools across three local government areas, while over 1,000 teachers and education administrators have also received specialised training.
The initiative, she said introduces digital learning tools that allow pupils to interact with structured educational content through devices equipped with specialised software, while teachers guide them through step-by-step learning activities.
Professor Maigari said the EIDU platform also enables education authorities to track student participation and learning progress through a monitoring dashboard that provides real-time classroom data.
She added that the Gombe State government has already included the next phase of the EIDU initiative in its plan to ensure sustainability and expansion.
The Commissioner said the state plans to scale the programme to about 40,000 pupils across the eleven local government areas of the state, as part of broader efforts to improve learning outcomes and strengthen basic education across the state.
