Green White Green (GWG) Nigeria Limited has described football as a powerful tool for promoting unity and peaceful coexistence among people, regardless of ethnic or religious differences.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the company, and sponsor of the proposed Gombe Emir’s Cup Football Tournament, Ahmed Shaibu Gara Gombe, made this known while briefing journalists shortly after a meeting with football stakeholders in Gombe.
Gara Gombe said the Emir’s Cup Football Tournament is designed to strengthen unity through traditional institutions, while also serving as a platform for discovering and showcasing football talents from various emirates and chiefdoms across Gombe State.
According to him, the competition will help reduce security challenges by constructively engaging youths, instead of allowing them to indulge in social vices such as drug abuse, phone snatching, and other criminal activities.
He explained that youths would be actively involved either as players on the pitch or as supporters of their respective emirates.
The sponsor further noted that representing one’s emirate is a source of pride for players, urging youths across the state to participate fully in the forthcoming tournament.
He also disclosed that the Emir’s Cup trophy tour is scheduled to commence on Monday, during which the trophy will be taken to the palaces of emirs and chiefs across the state.
