An Associate Professor and Head of the Mass Communication Department at North Eastern University, Gombe, Dr Hamid Adamu, has called on media organizations to adopt fact checking as a routine practice to curb the spread of misinformation.
Dr. Adamu made the call during a one-day capacity-building workshop organized by the Nigerian Press Council NPC for journalists from the North-East, held in Federal Polytechnic Bauchi.
He emphasized that the mass media must hold government accountable for its actions while upholding objectivity and accuracy in reportage.
According to him, misleading information poses a serious threat, commending the NPC for organizing the workshop aimed at educating journalists in the sub region.
Declaring the event open, Executive Secretary of the NPC Dr Dili Ezughah, reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to upholding ethical standards in Nigerian journalism.
Represented by the Council’s Director of Legal Matters, Dr Ngozi Ike, Dr Ezughah explained that the training was designed to equip journalists with the skills required to navigate the challenges and responsibilities of today’s rapidly evolving digital media landscape.
He appreciated the Bauchi State Government for hosting the event and urged participants to apply the knowledge gained in their reportage to strengthen public confidence in the media.
On his part Bauchi State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Usman Shehu Usman, reiterated Governor Bala Mohammed’s administration’s commitment to repositioning state owned media organizations in line with international best practices.
Radio Nigeria reports that participants were drawn from Jewel FM, Globe FM, Gombe Media Corporation, Vision FM, Albarka Radio, NTA, BATV, print media organizations, as well as media executives,ademicians among others.
The 2025 workshop focused on enhancing fact checking skills to combat misinformation, with the theme Public Trust and Ethical Journalism in the Digital Age.
