Health experts in Gombe State have emphasized the importance of regular antenatal care for the early detection and treatment of preeclampsia, a life-threatening pregnancy condition affecting mothers and babies.
The experts spoke during the maiden celebration of World Preeclampsia Day organized by the Preeclampsia Awareness Club in Gombe.
Former Commissioner for Health, Dr. Habu Dahiru, described preeclampsia as preventable and manageable when detected early through consistent antenatal visits. He urged pregnant women to watch out for symptoms such as severe headache, blurred vision, swelling, and high blood pressure.
The Chairperson of the Preeclampsia Awareness Club, Dr. Amina Rabiu Baba, revealed that over 1,200 women with hypertensive pregnancy disorders were treated at the Federal Teaching Hospital Gombe in 2025, with most cases already severe.
Speakers at the event called for stronger awareness campaigns, improved healthcare services, and community involvement to reduce maternal and newborn deaths linked to preeclampsia.
