The Nigeria for Women Project has trained one hundred and twenty Ward Facilitators in Funakaye as part of efforts to improve the livelihoods of women, particularly in rural and semi-urban communities.
The project, a government initiative supported by the World Bank, is designed to empower women economically by addressing challenges such as limited access to finance, skills and markets, while promoting gender equality and reducing poverty.
The training was organised by the Gombe State Ministry of Women Affairs in collaboration with the project’s Scale-Up Programme. It was held in Funakaye Local Government Area.
Speaking at the event, the State Project Coordinator, Hauwa Adamu Saraki, said the facilitators were equipped to guide and support Women Affinity Groups as platforms for peer learning, savings, training and collective action. She explained that the facilitators would help form and register the groups and monitor their weekly activities to ensure effectiveness.
Chairman of Funakaye Local Government Area, Shuaibu Abdulrahman, commended Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya for his commitment to grassroots women empowerment. Represented by his deputy, Usman Busun, he urged the facilitators to work diligently to ensure women benefit fully from the programme.
One of the beneficiaries, Nafisa Garba, expressed appreciation to the state government and project leadership for selecting Bajoga as one of the benefiting local governments, noting that the initiative would enhance women’s economic opportunities across the state.
Officials say the initiative, backed by the World Bank, will advance economic empowerment, reduce poverty and strengthen community wellbeing through sustained support to women’s groups.
