The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) had planned a nationwide strike on Wednesday, June 7 to protest the recent increase in the pump price of petrol. However, in a surprise move, the union called off the planned strike, citing the need for further consultations.
Barely 48 hours after the inauguration of President Bola Tinubu the NNPCL stations started selling fuel at N537 per litre in some states and the FCT.
The TUC had earlier announced that the strike would be indefinite until the government reversed the pump price of petrol.
The planned strike had caused mixed reactions in the country. Some were of the opinion that the removal of the fuel subsidy which supposedly drove the price of the product was for the overall benefit of the economy, others believed measures should have been put in place to cushion the effect on the people.
However, on Tuesday evening, the TUC released a statement saying that it had decided to suspend the strike to allow for further consultations with the government. The union said it had received assurances from the government that it would address the concerns raised by the union.
Among the demands by the TUC was an increase in the national minimum wage from the current N30,000 to N200,000 and the commitment of all the governors to the implementation of the new wage.
It is however, worthy to note that some States are yet to implement the N30,000 minimum wage agreement since the federal government commenced its implementation in April 2019.
The wage increase and other demands are contained in a charter signed by Comrade Festus Osifo, the President of TUC and Comrade Nuhu Abba Toro, the Secretary-General.
